The image reproduced on our tray is borrowed from a Roman fresco created around 50–40 B.C. in the Neapolitan villa of P. Fannius Synistor, which was buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79. The bedroom, where the painting was originally located, is faithfully reconstructed at The Met. Each wall is decorated with colorful grotto scenes and architectural vistas in the so-called Second Style.
