This striking sculpture reproduces a bronze horse figure (8th century B.C.) from Greece’s Geometric period (ca. 900 to 700 B.C.). The roots of classical Greece lie in this pivotal era, one of dramatic transformation that led to the establishment of primary Greek institutions such as the Greek alphabet and the city-state. Evidence for the Geometric culture survives in the form of epic poetry, archaeological records, and artistic representation, including votive offerings of terracotta and bronze. Horses are one of the most familiar Geometric symbols; the Museum houses several Geometric-period horse statuettes, but the clarity and elegance of form in this example epitomize Geometric art at its most accomplished.
