Even among the rare medieval treasures at The Met Cloisters, The Unicorn Rests in a Garden (1495–1505) stands out as an exceptional highlight of the Museum’s collection. This iconic French and South Netherlandish tapestry may have been created as a single image rather than part of a series; namely the Unicorn Tapestries, which are among the most beautiful and complex works of art from the late Middle Ages that survive. This masterwork depicts a unicorn resting in a garden enclosure beneath a pomegranate tree, enveloped by a millefleurs backdrop of richly symbolic plants.
